Bang Tao Beach Phuket — The Heart of the Laguna Estate

Bang Tao Beach is a six-kilometre arc of white sand on Phuket’s north-west coast, forming the western boundary of the Laguna Phuket estate and widely recognised as one of the finest beaches on the island. Unlike the better-known but heavily commercialised stretches of Patong, Kata, and Karon, Bang Tao retains a sense of scale, space, and natural beauty that is increasingly rare on a coast that has seen rapid development over the past two decades. The beach’s width, its gradual entry into warm, clear Andaman water, and the distinctive backdrop of casuarina trees and resort gardens make it a particular favourite among travellers who have experienced Phuket extensively and know what genuine beach quality feels like.

What distinguishes Bang Tao most sharply from other Phuket beach destinations is the integration of the Laguna estate along its southern and central sections. The resort zone of the beach, maintained by the estate’s hotels and operated for the use of guests, offers a quality of beach infrastructure — sun loungers, towel service, watersport facilities, beachside bars and dining — that transforms what might otherwise be simply a beautiful strip of sand into a complete destination experience.

Bang Tao Beach Geography and Character

Northern Bang Tao — Local and Uncrowded

The northern section of Bang Tao, beyond the Laguna estate’s boundary, has a more local and informal character. Small beachside restaurants serving fresh seafood, massage kiosks operated by local families, and stretches of beach with minimal commercial presence define this end of the bay. It is a popular destination for Phuket residents who appreciate the quality of the beach without the resort context, and for more independently minded travellers who prefer a less structured beach experience. The northern section is also where the beach’s width is most dramatic — at low tide, the sand extends almost 80 metres from the casuarina treeline to the water’s edge.

Central Bang Tao — The Laguna Resort Zone

The central section of Bang Tao, fronting the Laguna estate, is where the integration of resort and beach is most complete. SAii Laguna Phuket, recently renovated, enjoys 300 metres of direct beachfront with a modern beach club operation. Angsana Laguna Phuket’s beachfront position at the southern end of the resort zone provides guests with the estate’s most direct and unobstructed beach access. Dusit Thani Laguna Phuket is positioned slightly further from the beachfront — guests reach the beach via a short walk through resort grounds — but its beachside presence is well established and facilities are comprehensive. The beach in front of the Laguna hotels is maintained to a high standard, with regular cleaning, sunbed arrangements, and watersport infrastructure.

Southern Bang Tao — Toward Surin and Cherng Talay

As Bang Tao transitions southward toward the Surin Beach and Cherng Talay area, the character of the beach community becomes more diverse and interesting. The road running behind this section of the beach hosts some of Phuket’s most celebrated independent restaurants, beach clubs, and lifestyle boutiques. The Boat Lagoon area and the broader Cherng Talay neighbourhood have grown into one of Phuket’s most cosmopolitan communities, with an internationally diverse resident population and a high concentration of quality restaurants, coffee shops, and lifestyle services.

Hotels at Bang Tao Beach — Laguna Phuket Estate

Banyan Tree Phuket

Banyan Tree Phuket is the estate’s flagship property and one of the most recognised luxury resort brands in Asia. Set amid lush tropical gardens and lagoon waterways, the hotel’s accommodation is exclusively in private pool villas — a format that Banyan Tree helped pioneer in Asia during the 1990s. The property is ideal for honeymooners, couples seeking maximum privacy and romance, and seasoned luxury travellers who appreciate understated elegance over conspicuous grandeur. The Banyan Tree Spa, consistently ranked among the finest in Thailand, and Saffron Restaurant, widely cited as a benchmark for fine Thai dining, are the resort’s two defining experiential anchors.

Angsana Laguna Phuket

Angsana Laguna Phuket is a five-star beachfront resort built around the estate’s iconic 323-metre free-form pool — officially the longest of its kind in Phuket. The hotel’s direct Bang Tao beach access and its position at the southern end of the resort zone make it the Laguna property with the strongest beachfront identity. The atmosphere is more vibrant and social than Banyan Tree, making it an excellent choice for families, groups, and younger luxury travellers. Room categories range from Lagoon View rooms and Pool Access suites to private two-bedroom villa suites, many with their own private pools and lagoon or garden views. The Angsana Spa, while smaller than the Banyan Tree spa, offers a consistently high-quality treatment experience with Asian-inspired therapies.

Dusit Thani Laguna Phuket

Dusit Thani Laguna Phuket combines the warmth of Thai heritage hospitality with the comprehensive facilities of a large beachfront resort. Set on Bang Tao’s white sand with unobstructed views of the Andaman Sea, the hotel is a particular favourite for families, with a comprehensive kids’ club, daily activity programmes covering batik painting, junior chef sessions, fruit carving, and yoga, and a beach environment that is well monitored and safe for young swimmers. Dining at Dusit Thani is notably strong, with Benjarong offering fine Thai cuisine, La Trattoria delivering classic Italian, and the Casuarina Beach Restaurant providing casual beachside dining and cocktails.

SAii Laguna Phuket

SAii Laguna Phuket is the estate’s most recently renovated property and represents the destination’s most contemporary design aesthetic. The redesign concentrated on the pool and beach areas, creating a modern beach club environment that integrates seamlessly with the 300 metres of direct beachfront access. SAii’s three restaurants — Miss Olive Oyl (Mediterranean), Mr Tomyum (Thai), and Locavore (breakfast buffet) — together with its Bean/Co coffee shop provide a strong and diverse in-house dining programme. The hotel’s room categories span lagoon view, ocean view, and ocean front options, with Club room types providing access to the Club Lounge’s gourmet breakfast, afternoon tea, and evening cocktails. SAii Laguna Phuket hosted the prestigious Serandipians Essence of Phuket event for the second consecutive year in 2026, testament to its standing in the global luxury hospitality community.

Things to Do at Bang Tao Beach

Watersports

Bang Tao Beach offers a comprehensive watersport programme through the Laguna estate’s activity centres. Windsurfing, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, snorkelling equipment hire, and sailing are all available. The calm conditions of the high season (November through April) make the bay particularly suitable for beginner and family watersport activities. The northern end of the bay, where prevailing winds from the south-west channel along the shoreline during the May to October period, is one of Phuket’s better kitesurfing locations for experienced practitioners.

Yoga and Wellness on the Beach

Morning yoga sessions on Bang Tao Beach are available through several of the Laguna hotels and through independent wellness operators in the area. The beach at dawn — before the day’s heat builds and while the light has that particular Andaman gold quality — is widely cited by long-term Phuket residents as one of the most consistently beautiful environments on the island for a morning practice. Several of the estate’s hotels also offer private yoga sessions in villas or garden environments for guests who prefer a more intimate setting.

Sunset Watching

Bang Tao Beach’s western orientation means it receives the full impact of Phuket’s celebrated Andaman sunsets. The beach faces almost due west, and on clear evenings between October and March the sunsets can be extraordinary — the sky over the Andaman takes on a range of amber, coral, and crimson tones that photographers and painters have been drawn to for decades. The beach restaurants, hotel beach clubs, and the informal northern section all offer good sunset viewing positions, but the elevated perspective from the upper floors of SAii Laguna Phuket or the ocean-view suites of Dusit Thani provides the most dramatic vantage point.

Bang Tao Beach Dining Outside the Laguna Estate

While the Laguna estate’s dining portfolio is exceptional, Bang Tao and the broader Cherng Talay area offer a rich independent restaurant scene that is well worth exploring. The concentration of quality independent restaurants in the 1–3 kilometre zone behind the beach rivals anything available in Phuket Town or the Patong–Kata strip. Cuisine covers Thai, Italian, Japanese, French, and fusion, with price points ranging from inexpensive local Thai canteens to destination fine dining. The area’s expatriate resident community has been the primary driver of this culinary development over the past decade.

“We’ve been coming to Bang Tao for six years and it keeps getting better. The Laguna beach zone is meticulously maintained, the sunset views are world-class, and the restaurants behind the beach have really come of age. We stayed at SAii this year and the renovation is stunning — the beach club especially is a real step up.”
